I advised Asamoah Gyan to retire from the Black Stars in 2017 because players didn’t want to help him succeed – experienced Ghanaian coach [GTV Sports+]

Legendary Ghanaian trainer Joseph Emmanuel Sarpong has revealed he advised ex-Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan to retire from the Black Stars back in 2017.

The 36-year-old officially released a letter to communicate his decision to retire from the Ghana senior national team after he was removed as captain of the team.

Gyan has been speaking ahead of the launch of his autobiography dubbed Legyandary.

He told Karl Tufuoh on GTV Sports+’ Sunday Night Live show that he was deeply hurt about how he was stripped of the captaincy and given to Andre Ayew.

Meanwhile, coach Sarpong has revealed he advised Gyan to retire from the senior national team after observing the conduct of players ahead of a game against Congo in Kumasi.

“I called Asamoah after observing what was happening around the team and impressed upon him to call it a quit from the national team. But, he told me he wanted to play at his last World Cup [Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup] before retiring. But, he never did until he was removed,” he told Kwame Dwomoh-Agyemang.
