Akonnor, a former VfL Wolfsburg and Ghana captain, was hired as Ghana coach in January 2019 however he was fired in September 2021 after overseeing 10 games with a win rate of just 40% – having won four, lost four, and drawn two.

The former Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak coach received public backlash for his team’s performance and he has admitted to making mistakes during his time as head coach of the team.

“I made mistakes. I’ve learned a lot from that area. If I get the chance again it would definitely be different in how I go about things,” he told Worlanyo on the SportsNite show.

He was replaced by Serbian trainer Milovan Rajevac who was also fired after a short spell in charge of the team.
