I’m sorry for C.K Akonnor for losing his Black Stars job – Isaac Cofie [Asempa FM SportsNite]
Ghana midfielder Isaac Cofie says he feels sorry for C.K Akonnor who was sacked from his role as Black Stars head coach last month.
Akonnor was appointed in January 2020 as a successor to James Kwasi Appiah but he lasted less than two years as he was sacked in September 2021 following an uninspiring performance of the Black Stars against Ethiopia and South Africa.
Though Cofie didn’t feature for the Black Stars during the spell of Akonnor, the Sivasspor midfielder says he feels sorry for the coach.
“I’m sorry for C.K Akonnor for losing his job. It’s always bad news when a coach loses his job,” he told Enoch Worlanyo on Asempa FM’s SportsNite show.
The former Genoa midfielder says the handiwork of Milovan Rajevac can easily be seen on the Black Stars in their last two games against Zimbabwe.
“You can easily see the handiwork of the new coach on the team. He is improving the team. I think that from what we have seen there is room for improvement but we are very very on course,” he added.
“I think that everything rises and falls with leadership. When a coach is able to show good leadership he is able to get the best of his players. It doesn’t really matter whether a coach is changed or not. It’s always about influence,” he concluded.
Cofie was scouted while playing juvenile football in Accra. He joined Genoa in 2010.
He has featured for clubs like Genoa, Torino, Sassuolo, Chievo Verona, Sporting Gijon, and now Sivasspor.
