Players Abroad: Emmanuel Gyasi’s late winner sees off Milan at San Siro

A dream win that would see the ‘Rossoneri’ leapfrog city-rivals Inter Milan, and rise to the summit of the Serie A table never came true because of the strike from Ghanaian forward Emmanuel Gyasi.

The first half looked to finish goalless after Theo Hernandez missed a spot-kick in the 45th minute, but, Rafael Leao had different plans after he picked up a pass and gets to the edge of the box before clipping a brilliant lob over the goalkeeper and into the empty net to make it 1-0 at halftime.

Just four minutes after the hour mark, Kevin Agudelo of Spezia converts a killer cross with a curling shot inside the left post to bring the game to where it started.

Milan thought they had found the winner in the 93rd minute, but just before Junior Messias pulled the trigger on a fantastic curling shot that flew into the back of the net, the referee had blown his whistle to give the hosts a free-kick, ruling out the goal.

Adding to Stefano Pioli’s (AC Milan’s manager) frustrations, a quickfire Spezia counter-attack in the 95th minute saw Emmanuel Gyasi take full advantage and net a late winner, stunning the Rossoneri and stopping any dreams they had of going top.

A goal today was Gyasi’s fourth of the campaign in 21 Serie A matches.
