This former Ghana U20 defender has explained why he switched his nationality to Liberia
Former Ghana U20 defender Arago Jamal has explained why he switched his nationality to represent Liberia at the senior level.
Arago, 28, has been handed a call-up by the Lone Stars for the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria and the Central Africa Republic.
The defender has a Liberian lineage as his mother is from the neighbouring country.
In an interview with Ghana Sports Online, the Sabail FK defender explains why he decided to switch his nationality to Liberia.
“I took the decision based on some personal reasons,” he said.
Arago who emerged winner of the 2009 edition of the MTN Soccer Academy talent hunt reality show, explains that he didn’t make his decision based on the lack of attention from Ghana.
“Not at all [its not because of the constant snub by Ghana] I do really believe in my qualities I just have some private personal reasons and that’s all,” he told El Akyereko.
His vision is clearly set out as he targets success with the Lone Stars.
“To help the country to get to a better level in terms of progressing to tournaments because as it stands we all see it’s been ages we haven’t seen the team made it to top competitions,” he added.
Arago becomes the latest player with Ghanaian-Liberia links to emerging on the headline following the emergence of Alphonso Davies who was born to Liberian parents in Ghana’s Central Region but plays for Canada.
