Tony Yeboah’s nephew Kelvin Yeboah explains why he rejected Black Stars call up to join Italy U21

Nephew of legendary Ghana striker Tony Yeboah, Kelvin Yeboah, has explained why he turned down the opportunity to represent Ghana at senior level to respond to Italy U21 call up.

Yeboah, 21, has been one of the most promising strikers in Europe after notching 5 goals and 1 assist in his last 5 games for Austria Bundesliga side Sturm Graz.

Ghana coach Charles ‘C.K’ Akonnor scouted the young striker and named him in his provisional 30-man squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia and South Africa.

Just days after the Accra-born was handed his maiden Black Stars call up Italy called him up into their U21 squad and the striker decided to respond to the call up from the European powerhouse rather than of his country of birth.

“I came to Italy in 2004 when I was 4-5 years old. I got my passport for quite a while. In terms of football, I played in Monza, Novara, then I went to Gozzano,” Yeboah is quoted by the Italian press.

“I found myself very well here, I already knew some guys from this group as a child because I played against them,” he added.

Yeboah was born in Accra, Ghana’s capital – but left the shores of the West African nation when he was 5 years old.
