VIDEO: Daniel Amartey went down too easily – Asamoah Gyan says Ghana’s penalty against South Africa was too casual [Asempa FM SportsNite]

Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has waded into the controversy of the penalty incident involving the Black Stars and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying clash a fortnight ago.

Senegalese referee Maguette N’Diaye awarded a 32nd-minute penalty to the Black Stars in the all-important decider between the four-time African champions and the Rainbow nation.

Reading FC defender Andy Yiadom, who featured in the game at the Cape Coast Stadium, has told the BBC he feels the call was a soft one from the referee after seeing replays from the television screens.

Gyan, who is Ghana’s all-time top-scorer with 51 goals and Africa’s leading scorer at the FIFA World Cup, watched the game from the screens and has shared his opinion on the incident in an interview with Andy Kwaku Obeng on Asempa FM’s SportsNite show.

“I think the incident was a bit casual. From where I sit and how I saw it I think Daniel Amartey went down too easily but the referee was closer to the spot and probably had a better view of the situation. Remember was the tempo of the game also could have influenced the referee’s decision to award the spot-kick,” the former Sunderland and Stade Rennais forward said in the interview.

Gyan has been capped 109 times and has scored 51 goals for the West African powerhouse.
